Fostering without limits: Brandon & Adam's Story
Young couple Brandon and Adam chose to foster in order to start a family. Read their incredible journey and what life looks like now with their two foster sons.

Brandon, 26, and his husband Adam, 33, are a young gay couple from Northamptonshire. When they decided that it was time to start a family together, they knew that fostering was the right choice for them.
"Our friends were beginning to settle down and have families, and we were ready for that, too. As a same-sex couple, it's not as straightforward as, ‘let's have a baby!’ We decided to foster so that we could achieve our dream of having a family while doing something rewarding at the same time."
Stronger together
The couple applied to foster with Fosterplus in October 2023 and, after completing their foster parent training, welcomed home their two foster sons, aged 5 and 6. They said:
“Our boys are biological brothers. Fostering them together was really important to us. Kids in care have already faced so much disruption, so keeping them together makes a big difference. They are the most amazing kids, and they’re so much stronger together than they ever could be on their own.”
Redefining fostering norms
We asked the couple if they had any concerns when they first considered fostering. Brandon said:
“We did worry at first that we were too young to foster. Most people’s perception of fostering is that it’s for retired people, but we’ve met lots of young couples on our journey who are doing a fantastic job. Fostering at a younger age has some great benefits, too. Our boys are so energetic from the minute they wake up to the minute they go to bed, and having the ability to keep up with them is so important.”
Adam added:
“There are lots of other LGBT foster couples out there, too. We were treated exactly the same as any other couple throughout the process, which is all anyone asks for.
We were surprised at how much support was out there for us. There’s a real community around fostering. Without all the support we’ve received from our fostering agency, family and friends, we'd be lost.”
Reward doesn't come out of nowhere
The young couple are very early into their fostering journey, having been with their foster sons since June 2024. So far they’ve had a great experience, from sharing their first Christmas together to family holidays and taking the boys out for adventures, and the family has so much to look forward to!
When asked about their time as foster parents so far, Adam said:
“Fostering is an experience like no other. You could ask me today, and I’d say it's the best thing in the world, but if you asked me tomorrow, I might say that it's very challenging! Through it all, it’s a fun ride, and there’s nothing more rewarding than seeing our boys grow.”
No looking back
When asked what advice the pair would give to anyone considering becoming a foster parent, Adam said:
“I’d say go for it. Don’t fret that your age, sexuality, or anything else will be a barrier. Fostering is the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done. We've never looked back. Becoming foster parents has made our lives so much better - we didn't realise what we were missing until we met our two boys.”
